High Rise Elevated Solar Structure: A Better choice

High Rise Elevated Solar Structure: A Better Choice

The world is striving hard to shift its energy dependency from traditional coal/diesel-based energy to renewable energy sources due to the series of economic and environmental benefits they offer for a better future. Among all the renewable energy sources, solar energy proves to be the most economical and sustainable way to reduce our electricity bills and carbon footprint.

Solar panels are not only an environmentally friendly source of energy but also a great way to enhance your home value and reduce energy bills.

The researchers are continuously striving hard to improve the efficiency of the solar panel at a reduced cost. During the design and installation of the rooftop solar plants, space is an essential constraint one must check for a particular location, especially in metropolitan and urban environments.

A proper mounting structure with an efficient design system forms the pillar of the entire solar energy system, they are not only responsible for the support system but also help in withstanding extreme weather conditions.

With the elevated design structure, one can reduce electricity bills in a limited rooftop space.

Types of design structure:

Depending on the design of the solar roof mounting structure to be installed at a particular location, it is classified as:

  • Low-Rise Structure:

In this type of structure, panels are installed on the rooftop and with the lowest point of the panel at a ground clearance of less than 1m.This is the structure that minimizes the usage of metal, has the least wind loading, and consequently offers the lowest system cost.

  • High-rise or Elevated Structure:

The elevated design structure, also known as a high-rise design structure, offers improved solar efficiency in a limited roof space. Solar panels are installed at a height of 6 to 8 feet from the ground.

We at SunEdison also offer a pergola design with a wooden finish.

With a solar pergola design, one can easily install the solar panel and enjoy the additional benefits of furnishing outdoor power to decor gardens and plants.

But before installing solar panels on the pergola, one must ensure that these pergolas are durable enough to withstand the weight of the solar panels.

Why go for elevated design structures?

The lifespan of solar panels is more than 25 years, so many consumers switching to solar installation are worried about space acquaintance, especially in urban areas where rooftop space availability is limited and costly.

If we go for conventional solar installation, it consumes all the rooftop space, only a height of 500MM is given from the ground (it is for cleaning purposes to remove dust and debris). If we go for an elevated design, a clearance space of 2000 MM(depending on the consumer requirement) is provided from the ground level. With this design structure, one can enjoy the benefits of going solar as well as can use the space wisely for any commercial purpose or simply enjoy the rooftop space as one can freely move below and around the solar panels.

Why consumers are shifting towards elevated design?

  1. Rooftop space utilization: With the elevated design structure, one can utilize the rooftop space efficiently for other purposes like rooftop gardening, cafeteria, or simply can enjoy the space to rest or walk under the shadow of the solar panel.

With this design structure, solar panels can be installed on the roof despite the roof obstacles (like tanks, columns, etc.), which may not be generally feasible with conventional solar design.
  1. Improved solar output: Going for an elevated structure helps in increasing the solar output capacity by almost 20% by using highly efficient modules. Going for elevated design structure even with regular modules helps in increasing the solar output capacity (as it bypasses shadows) and thus enhances output capacity.
  2. Reduced losses: The elevated design structures are preferred due to the reduced shading losses and thus improved output efficiency.

Increased commercial value: High rise commercial buildings have generally reduced rooftop space with the majority of the raw material or any extra accessories placed on the rooftop. In such cases, going for conventional solar installation is difficult due to space constraints and roof obstacles. Going for elevated solar panel installation not only saves energy bills but also increases the environmental points of the particular building. This helps in the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)certification process.

LEED certification process is a globally recognized certificate for sustainability achievement and leadership program, that provides green building rating and describe guidelines for green, eco-friendly, efficient and cost-saving green building.

Many commercial buildings are trying hard to earn this certification to improve their economical and environmental value.

Should we go for an elevated design structure?

To answer this question, it is necessary to know the energy requirement, rooftop usage and the budget of a particular consumer.

But it is a great choice to choose elevated rooftop design structure over conventional design in the following two cases:

  1. If you want to enjoy rooftop space for different purposes like gardening, cafeteria, relaxation etc.
  2. If the rooftop area consists of different obstacles like constructive parts or any other object placed on the rooftop.
